Avec espace/mémoire, j’aborde le Web comme la manifestation d’un phénomène de traduction, soit l’idée d’un processus encodant et décodant notre expérience du monde par l’intermédiaire de systèmes et de langages. À cet égard, Internet m’apparaît comme une structure à travers laquelle se traduisent les informations, les identités, les relations et, inévitablement, les sens. Sous forme de textes, d’images et de sons, dans le cyberespace, nous nous traduisons. – Pierre-Luc Lapointe

Le récipiendaire du prix l@ch@mbrebl@nche 2008-2009 Pierre-Luc Lapointe a récemment complété son séjour de production au LabWeb avec la mise en ligne de son œuvre espace/mémoire. LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE, qui remet annuellement ce prix à un finissant de l’École des arts visuels de l’Université Laval pour la qualité de sa recherche en art Web, est heureuse de vous inviter au lancement de cette œuvre le vendredi 22 mai 2009 lors d’un 5@7 en présence de l’artiste.

Fusion du réel et du virtuel, espace/mémoire se présente comme un système évolutif d’empreintes se dessinant peu à peu à la surface ultramince du cyberespace. Muni d’une caméra Web, l’internaute qui fait l’expérience de l’œuvre peut générer une quantité d’images, composées par addition de couches successives. Celles-ci apparaissent comme le résultat d’une interaction entre la présence physique du corps de l’utilisateur (ou de son environnement) et le système, qui lui, fonctionne dans un espace intangible. Enregistrant la trace des perturbations, si minimes soient-elles, d’un environnement donné, espace/mémoire montre la différence comme une manifestation visuelle inaltérable. Ainsi, avec la donne temporelle, le système entre inévitablement dans un état d’entropie : les pistes se brouillent, l’empreinte unique est vouée à disparaître. Comment alors peut-on percevoir, à travers la saturation et la complexité, l’unicité et le détail?

Avec ses extensions métaphoriques sur nos manières d’être ensemble, sur le chaos urbain ou sur le fonctionnement même du souvenir, espace/mémoire, bien qu’elle soit ancrée dans le Web, s’ouvre à d’autres espaces. Espaces des domaines scientifique, social et historique qui, en lien avec la notion de traduction, peuvent être regardés comme des mondes avec lesquels on peut avoir un rapport vécu par l’image. À cet effet, si l’esthétique de l’empreinte, avec espace/mémoire, est détournée du réel, qu’en est-il de l’intrusion du privé dans un système aux ouvertures partagées?

Pierre-Luc Lapointe poursuit présentement une maîtrise en arts visuels à l’Université Laval. Ses recherches tendent à questionner les processus systémiques, l’itération et la rétroaction au travers de projets aux divers modes d’expression. En tant que récipiendaire du prix l@ch@mbrebl@nche 2008-2009, il s’est vu accorder une résidence de six semaines (02.03.09-12.04.09) au LabWeb, une assistance technique personnalisée, l’hébergement de son projet sur le site Web du centre et un texte critique (à venir) dans une publication de LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE. espace/mémoire a été réalisée avec le langage JAVA sous l’interface Processing.

memory/space

With memory/space, I broach the Web as the expression of a translation phenomenon, that is to say the idea of a process encoding and decoding our experience of the world by the intermediate of systems and languages. In this way, I view Internet as a structure through which information, identities, relations and, inevitably, senses, are translated. With texts, images and sounds, in the cyberspace, we translate ourselves. – Pierre-Luc Lapointe

The recipient of the 2008-2009 l@ch@mbrebl@nche Prize Pierre-Luc Lapointe recently completed his production residency at the WebLab with the online launch of his project memory/space. LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE, which awards this prize anually to a last term student of Laval University’s Fine Art School for the quality of his/her research in Web art, is pleased to invite you to the public launch of this project on Friday May 22 at 5 pm in the presence of the artist.

Merging the real and the virtual, memory/space presents itself as a progressive system of prints which gradually appear on the infrathin surface of the cyberspace. With a WebCam, the Internet surfer who experiments the project can produce images made by an addition of successive layers. These images appear as the result of an interaction between the physical presence of the user’s body (or his/her environment) and the system, which, in opposition, works in an intangible space. Recording all disruption’s traces, as minimal as they may be, memory/space shows difference as an unfailing visual sign. Consequently, with time, the system enters in a state of entropy : tracks are blured, the unique print is doomed to dissapear. How then, can we, through complexity and saturation, distinguish uniqueness and detail?

With its metaphorical extentions about our collective behavioral patterns, about urban chaos and about memory’s functioning, memory/space, anchored in the Web, is opened to other spaces. Spaces of the fields of science, history and sociology, which, in relation to the translation theme of the project, may be viewed as worlds with which we can have a relation lived through images. As a matter of fact, if the esthetic of the print, with memory/space, is distanced from reality, how can we describe the intrusion of private life in a system of shared openings?

Pierre-Luc Lapointe is currently undergoing a Master degree in Fine Arts at Laval University. His researches, expressed in different mediums, tend to question systematic process, iteration and retroactive effects. As the recipient of the 2008-2009 l@ch@mbrebl@nche Prize, he was awarded with a resicency of six week (02.03.09-12.04.09) at the WebLab, a technical assistance, the hosting of his project on the Web site of the artist-run-center and a critical text (to come) in a publication of LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE. The project memory/space has been created with JAVA language under the interface Processing.
